Choosing a NetID

When you apply for your NetID, you may choose your own NetID name. This is the name by which you will be known to UNM’s computer and e-mail system. Many people choose a NetID that is comprised of all or part of their name. For example, Joe Garcia might choose the NetID jgarcia. His UNM email address would be jgarcia@unm.edu.

If the NetID name you choose is already being used, the application will prompt you to choose another NetID.

Rules for Choosing a NetID

  • NetIDs must have a minimum of three (3) characters and no more than eight (8).

  • All characters must be lowercase.

  • First character must be a letter.

  • Subsequent characters can be letters or numbers; no special characters are allowed.

  • Can be all or part of your name, or any word or phrase you choose. It should be something easy for yourself and others to remember.

Examples

OK:

  • tbell
  • tinkbell
  • tbell2
  • tinkerb
  • gr8scott

NOT OK:

  • TBell (must be all lowercase letters)
  • 4tinkb (must begin with a letter)
  • ilove$ (all characters must be letters or numbers; no special characters allowed)

UNM Retirees

Retiring UNM faculty and staff may keep their NetIDs indefinitely. The "Retired" affiliation will be added automatically. However, if you have any problems with your NetID, contact Customer Support Services, 505.277.5757.

UNM Departments and Organizations, and Non-UNM Users

NetIDs created for use by UNM departments and organizations, or for non-UNM guests, are given a termination date at the time the account is created. These NetIDs can be renewed for up to three years. Accounts that have passed the termination date will deleted. It is the responsibility of the account holder, the department or the organization, to renew NetIDs before the termination date.
