What is happening with NetID password requirements?
New password requirements were implemented October 4, 2009 for all UNM NetID passwords.
What are the new requirements?
- Passwords must be a minimum of eight (8) characters to a maximum of 20 characters.
- Passwords cannot repeat a character more than twice in a row, ex., xx is acceptable, xxx is not acceptable.
- Passwords must contain characters from at least three (3) of the following four (4) character sets:
- Numbers
- Uppercase letters: A, B, C, ...
- Lowercase letters: a, b, c, ...
- Special characters: ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + ` - = { } | [ ] : " ; ' < > ? , . /
What about the challenge-response system, will it change?
Not immediately. IT is developing a more user-friendly question set and will announce when it will change.
What about my Oracle / Banner password?
Oracle / Banner passwords have slightly more restrictive requirements.
- Oracle / Banner passwords must begin with a letter.
- Passwords must be a minimum of eight (8) characters to a maximum of 20 characters.
- Passwords cannot repeat a character more than twice in a row, ex., xx is acceptable, xxx is not acceptable.
- Passwords must contain characters from at least three (3) of the following four (4) character sets:
- Numbers
- Uppercase letters: A, B, C, ...
- Lowercase letters: a, b, c, ...
- Oracle / Banner passwords may only use the special characters _ (underscore) and # (pound / hash sign).
Do these changes impact HSC NetIDs?
The HSC / Hospital NetID is separate from the UNM NetID. The changes have no effect on HSC NetIDs.
