Your NetID comes with an email account with 1GB of disk space. You must have a NetID to begin using e-mail. Go to NetID Accounts to create your NetID.
How you access our e-mail varies depending on your affiliation with the University.
Students
Students are encouraged to access e-mail via the MyUNM portal, or Webmail, UNM's Web-based e-mail program. Both are accessible from anywhere you have Internet access and work with all standard browsers including, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Safari, and Opera.
If Web-based email doesn’t meet your needs, or you simply prefer your own desktop e-mail application, you can access your e-mail using a variety of popular programs, such as Macintosh Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.
See Modifying Your E-mail Program to Work with Your NetID Account for detailed instructions.
Faculty and Staff
IT recommends that faculty and staff who have a GroupWise account use it for e-mail. Please see the FastInfo 2680, Opt-in Asnwer to configure GroupWise e-mail.
Faculty and staff who are not using GroupWise may use Webmail of any preferred desktop e-mail application, e.g., Macintosh Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.
See Modifying Your Email Program to Work with Your NetID Account for detailed instructions.
Administrators
Administrators using GroupWise calendar should use the e-mail included in GroupWise.
If Web-based e-mail doesn’t meet your needs, or you simply prefer your own desktop e-mail application, you can access your e-mail using a variety of popular programs, such as Macintosh Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.
See FastInfo for generic configuration settings and instructions for popular e-mail programs for detailed instructions.
When configuring your e-mail program, IT recommends you use IMAP instead of POP.
IMAP leaves your email messages on the server until they are deleted and/or expunged, making it easier for you to access your e-mail from any computer with Internet access, e.g., at home, on campus, or wherever you happen to be.
POP downloads your messages to the computer you are currently using, then deletes, or expunges, them from the server. You may use POP, but you should be aware of its limitations and have a specific need for that configuration, e.g., you read or send e-mail from only one computer.
If you’re going to be away and unable to check your e-mail, you can set up an auto-reply to all messages received by your account. See FastInfo Answer 405, to set up and auto-reply.
You can forward your e-mail to another Web-based email account, such as Comcast, Google, Hotmail, .me, Yahoo, etc. See FastInfo Answer 404, to automatically forward your e-mail.
Your UNM email account comes with 1GB of disk space. Webmail continuously displays how much disk space you have used (default view) and automatically alerts you when you approach the limit of your e-mail disk space.
To conserve e-mail disk space:
Promptly delete unwanted messages, especially those with large attachments, such as images and PDF files.
If you use a desktop email program with POP, make sure your preferences or settings are configured to remove messages from the server after download.
Unsubscribe from unwanted electronic mailing lists, or stop delivery of mail while you are away and unable to check your email. Go to UNM's Listserv Page or see Techniques for Managing Your UNM NetID Disk Space for instructions.
