Creating pages on the UNM Web server
Creating an alias or Virtual Host for your site
The University of New Mexico requires five elements on any department or organization page linked to the UNM Home Page:
UNM must appear in the HTML Title tag.
The words University of New Mexico must appear on the home page.
The official UNM logo must appear on the home page.
A link back to the UNM home page must be included on the home page.
A link to contact information for the department must appear on the home page. Include an email address, phone number, fax number and UNM Mail Stop Code (MSC).
The UNM Health Sciences Center WWW Standards and Guidelines are available for review here.
All college, department, or organization pages must adhere to UNM policies and U.S. copyright laws.
Like traditional departmental publications, Web pages must follow UNM design standards. Although still in revision, The University of New Mexico Guide to Graphic Identification can help designers plan Web pages. For more information contact the UNM Strategic Communications and Marketing at 277.1989. A collection of official UNM logos which can be downloaded for use online or in print, is available here.
The ease with which written text, sound recordings, graphics, and other works can be electronically copied on the World Wide Web also brings a greater risk of copyright infringement. The UNM Legal Counsel has assembled information on the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA), the TEACH Act, and "fair use" issues so that students, staff, and faculty can be aware of how best to protect themselves from legal action — see Peer-to-Peer information and Copyright information.
All UNM computer users have the responsibility to use the UNM computer systems in an effective, efficient, ethical, and lawful manner. See the UNM Acceptable Computer Use Policy.
Requirements
You will need a department computer account on the IT UNIX systems. Complete the Request a NetID For Use by a Department or Organization form to obtain the account. For additional help, contact Customer Support Services, 277.5757.
Departmenets committing to a Web presentation will need to designate a certain amount of human resources to create and maintain the information offered on their pages. Any links to other Web locations will also need to be checked to ensure that those pages are still active.
If disk space requirements for your Web presentation exceed the 50MB default quota, contact IT Customer Support Services, 277.5757, to request an increase.
Guidelines
Review your work before placing it online. Ask coworkers to check to accuracy and readability.
Because of liability issues, links to home pages should be kept on one page and should be prefaced by a disclaimer similar to: The information here is provided by individual users of our web server. As such, neither the University of New Mexico, nor employees thereof are responsible for their content.
Create pages that will function with both graphical browsers (e.g., Firefox, IE, Safari) and text browsers (e.g., lynx).

Scripts available for use on the Web server
Departments and organizations that have pages on the UNM Web server under a departmental account can request a web alias. This provides a simpler URL for your department.
For example:
You can choose to drop the tilde or drop the tilde and truncate the departmental account name, e.g., revolution truncated as revolt.
Default URL
http://www.unm.edu/~deptxyz
Alias URL
http://www.unm.edu/xyz
All pages under ~revolution will also be recognized as /revolt
If you prefer, you can request a virtual host within the unm.edu domain.
Default URL
http://www.unm.edu/~revolution
Alias URL
http://revolt.unm.edu
All pages under ~revolution will also be recognized as revolt.unm.edu
Your site must be on the www.unm.edu server and the alias or virtual host must not already be in use. To request a departmental alias or virtual host, contact IT Customer Support Services at 277.5757, include the current URL and the desired alias or host name.
Departmental web pages that exist on www.unm.edu can use Urchin, a Web usage tracking program. It provides comprehensive Web usage reports. All reports are accessible from a web browser, no need to install additional software. And there are no charges to individual deparments for this service. To request your departmental pages be added to Urchin, contact IT Customer Support Services, 277.5757.
The UNM search engine is a Google Search Appliance. If your departmental pages are included in the search index, you can set up a search page that only looks within your specified site. You can find information about advanced searching, adding your site, and setting up a customized search for your site in the UNM Search Help pages.
CGI scripts are only available to deparmental accounts with pages linked to www.unm.edu (the UNM top page). Departments can request CGI access by contacting IT Customer Support Services, 277.5757.
