Project Overview
The University of New Mexico (UNM) and UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC) are bringing their separate digital identity systems together into one connected environment. Today, many people across our two organizations manage two accounts, two NetIDs, and two sets of tools. This project moves us toward a single account and a single sign-in across the University.
In short: we are simplifying how you sign in and get to your email, files, and applications while keeping the security of both institutions strong the whole way through. This is a consolidation of equals — UNM and HSC are partners in this work, not one absorbing the other.
Who may be affected: over time, staff, faculty, researchers, students, and clinical teams at both institutions. The people affected earliest are those who currently have both a UNM and an HSC account.
What to expect right now: for most people, nothing changes today, and no action is needed. When a change will affect you, you will be notified well in advance.
Objectives and Benefits
Working across two separate systems creates daily friction — two NetIDs, two logins, and tools that do not always talk to each other. Bringing them together delivers:
- One account, one sign-in. Two NetIDs consolidated into one username and one consistent identity across the University.
- Simpler day-to-day access. Fewer sign-ins and less switching between systems to reach your email, files, and applications.
- Easier collaboration. Working across UNM and HSC no longer means working across tools that don't connect.
- Stronger security. Consistent standards and tightened external-sharing controls across both institutions.
- Less complexity. One connected environment is simpler and more reliable to support.
Our commitment throughout: neither institution's security nor the protection of your data will be weakened at any point in the process.

General FAQs
Not right now. Eventually some people may be asked to take a simple step — updating a personalized ("vanity") email address, re-adding an account on a mobile app, or notifying external contacts. Anything we ask of you will be specific, time-bound, and come with step-by-step instructions.
Most people's NetIDs will not change. People who currently have two NetIDs will have them consolidated into one username, so you have one consistent identity. If this applies to you, you will be contacted directly with what is changing, your options, and the timing. [Specific groups and dates to be confirmed.]
For most people, no. Some accounts may receive additional email aliases, and a small number of people may see a change. Personalized ("vanity") addresses such as [@law.unm.edu, @cosmiac.org, @knme.org] may need to be updated manually, and instructions will be provided.
The goal is that you keep the access you have today. Some application sign-ins may need a one-time reconfiguration. External-sharing settings in SharePoint and OneDrive will be tightened to improve security, so if you share files outside the organization, you may be asked to confirm or re-establish those shares. Your multi-factor sign-in will continue to work, and all of the MFA options available today, including Microsoft Authenticator, will still be available. HSC users will need to set up their MFA methods once after the migration. You may notice small changes in your sign-in prompts. The organizations are also working toward a single, consistent password standard; when password requirements change, it will be announced in advance.
The project is being designed so your access and email continue to work as you move between roles. How email, data, and access are handled when someone moves between a UNM and an HSC role is being worked out now.
This is a phased effort taking place over [timeframe to be confirmed]. Individual changes are scheduled and communicated ahead of time, so you will not be surprised. You will be contacted directly — typically by email and through your IT team — before any change that affects you, and this page will be updated as the project reaches new milestones. It is the work of bringing UNM and HSC onto one connected identity and access system, so the University community can move toward a single account and sign-in instead of managing separate UNM and HSC accounts.
